sculpture

Meridian
My favorite sculpture(s) were made by the English artist Barbara Hepworth, who I just learned is actually Dame Barbara Hepworth, ahem.  She was born in 1903 and passed away in 1975.  This sculpture to the left is called Meridian and can be found amongst some trails in Westchester County, along with another one of her works called Family of Man.   Meridian is my all time favorite in the entire world.  Family of Man comes in at a relatively close second.

These sculptures were my little sanctuaries when I attended school at SUNY Purchase from Fall 1999 – Fall 2001.  It was a trying time, to say the least, and these sculptures offered not only solace, but an excuse to tromp around in the outdoors as well.
Family of Man

Although they are not perfectly symmetrical, these works depict linear happiness in the world of me.  Meridian so obviously plays off of negative space.  Family of Man does too, but on a more concentrated scale.  Both exemplify Modernism at its finest.

Enjoy, and if you ever find yourself in the neighborhood, stop on by and visit these works.  There are 43 additional sculptures scattered about the trails at the PepsiCo headquarters, located at 700 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, NY, 10577.
