the great tv stand debate

apothecary drawers would make me
happy, however, these are doors, not
real drawers...boo
There actually isn't much to debate about at all.  My husband and I are in the market for a tv stand.  We need one - end of story.  We were going to wait until we purchased our home, but Santa may be bringing us nice speakers and we would love to class up our entertainment/media area.  We have a very nice television, a receiver, a blu-ray player, and a cable box.  (The move to NJ meant cable for us - I went ten years without it.)

Presently, our television sits on a cabinet-type piece of furniture and the rest of the items sit in a wire stand that is better fit to be a plant stand.  It isn't awful, but we know we could do better.

The thought of buying one makes me a touch nervous though, as I am paranoid that when we find our home we are going to need a site-specific tv stand (i.e., a corner stand, or something that it super skinny that doesn't stick out too much into our living space).  However, I also think I need to stop worrying and just pick something out.

dream set-up - mount tv
and install barn doors
to hide when not in use
There also is the option of mounting it on the wall, but you still have to have the receiver and such displayed so remotes can work, which is another facet of a tv stand  I am having a hard time with.  I want everything all buttoned up when we aren't watching the tube, but that means you either need sliding doors or glass (really not into glass on a tv stand), unless you want an open door sticking out into your living space.

The other thing to think about is price, and the tv stands we have found seem to be either $250/$300 or $1,400/$1,650.  I think I know which option fits better into our budget.  This seems like such a big decision.  This thing needs to last us for a long, long time and I am not handling the pressure very well at all.

Maybe we should build exactly what we want with some reclaimed wood and our new tools that Santa will also be dropping off.  Stay tuned for that project.  If we can successfully build our own tv stand, I will be sure to post it!

  1. I really like the barn door idea....make the wood grain pop, or cool doors...then it is also an art piece as well as a TV hide!!
