one decorating decision down, 247 to go

Fort Greene, Brooklyn - not on
our list, but I like the map and
wish the artist (Lena Corwin)
took custom orders.
I don’t know how I came up with it, but yesterday on my way into work, an idea popped into my head regarding maps. I have been peeking and poking around so many design blogs and websites lately that I am amazed that I actually came up with this brilliant idea on my own. I really wanted to hang up a gigantic world map as a piece of artwork in our den. I was in Boston this past weekend, and the friend’s I visited had two very large world maps hung up in their apartment. Even after seeing it first hand in someone else’s home, I was still interested in hanging one up in our home. (Normally, I would try and think of something else to be more original, but I liked it that much.) However, in my groggy morning commute to work yesterday, I came up with the following idea: instead of hanging one map of the world, hang and frame a variety of maps from our favorite places.

I would like to use the photo I posted on Tuesday’s blog post as inspiration, in terms of placement and color. My husband and I have already begun shopping around for some artistic map renditions and have had a bit of luck - I think collecting them will be half the fun! So far the favorite places include; Portland, Maine; Fort Collins, Colorado; Green River Reservoir, Vermont; Sandy Hook, New Jersey; and Manhattan, New York. It would be really cool to decorate another wall in the house with a photograph from each of these places, and make the layout and sizes of the photographs correspond with those of the maps. Thankfully, my husband takes amazing photos, so this might not be too difficult. There are so many ways to decorate a house!

  1. Hi Kristin-Kat here! Been blog stalking you. Just wanted to say that I really enjoy reading your daily musings and thoughts. And, that I love the idea of decorating with maps. For some reason, I'm really into the idea of maps in the bathroom, so you can learn geography whilst doing....other things. Good luck with your vision!

  2. Thanks for the note! I hope you see this. I have been really awful at responding to comments, but I am trying to back on track with it. I too, like maps in bathrooms. My friend, Matt, had one in his bathroom and he even added a little circle in the middle of one of the oceans and called it Matt's Island.
