I had to laugh the other weekend when my parents were visiting. My mother said something that reminded me of the silly words we (still to this day) use to describe things. My mother does not like swear words, or other naughty sounding statements. However, we grew up calling hard candies “sucky candies”. It was she who would not allow us to say that things “sucked” when we were growing up. She preferred we say “my day vacuumed” or “the movie we watched vacuumed”. Her argument was that both statements meant the same thing, and although I agree with that statement, there is a very large difference in saying something totally sucks vs. something totally vacuums. Why on earth then, did she use the word “suck” as in “sucky candies”, when she could have called them hard candies? Who knows. We also call our pool house/shed the “hoochie”. And I just don’t mean my four immediate family members; our grandparents even call it the “hoochie”. Why on earth did they call it that? I have no idea, but having friends over to swim was pretty interesting.
Ha ha - I love this! My mom H-A-T-E-S the word "fart" and made the mistake one time of telling us that she would rather hear the word "fu@#" instead of the word "fart". Her darling daughters (while shopping for bridesmaid dresses for my sister's wedding) spent the day using the new alternate word in every way possible substituting it for the other word. "Yuck, it smells! Someone must have fu@#ed in here." "My stomach hurts, I think that if I could fu@# it would feel better." And so on... Mom STILL regrets suggesting that it was a more palatable word for her to hear. :-)
