strong dance, chiseled bodies

I went to see dance the other night for the first time in a while. I buy $10 tickets at the Joyce Theater, which houses modern dance companies for different periods of time – some stay for a few days, some stay for a few weeks. The tickets are obstructed view, but the view is obstructed because you are in the front row and the stage is a bit high. As long as the entire performance doesn’t take place on the ground in the back of the stage, you can see everything. It is a great extra-curricular activity at a very fair price.

The dance company I saw was one of my all-time favorites, Pilobolus. It isn’t traditional modern dance. It is a small company made up of extremely strong dancers that have bodies of chiseled steel. The partnering that takes place is incredible. They defy gravity in fluid motions, which makes them each look weightless. I really admired this company during my dancing days - waffy ballerinas they are not. These people are examples of pure human strength and perfectly toned muscles. Tuesday’s performance included pieces dating back as far as 1978, to a present day premiere. I enjoyed it all. Click here to learn more about the company.
