(maybe) saying good-bye to a favorite sweet

Thar she blows.
Man those look good.
I'm not positive what is going because I have read so much back and forth about it, but Crumbs cupcake store closed its doors on Monday. They may be reopening said doors in the near future, but for now they are gone. The horror. A lot of people that consider themselves "New Yorkers" poo-poo on Crumbs, but I was a huge fan...in so many ways. I like a minty dessert every once in a while and their grasshopper cupcake was a huge hit in my book. Moist, chocolate cake with a shitload of florescent green minty frosting and mini chocolate chips?! Yes. Please. Why don't more people use mini chocolate chips? They are amazing.

I always enjoyed bringing Crumbs home to friends and family. The cheers of joy I would receive when someone saw a Crumbs bag in my hand would instantly set my visit off to a great start. I had to ask myself though - am I surprised they closed? Not really. There are a lot of amazing bakeries in the city and in most cases there are one or two. Crumbs had fifty. It is just a cupcake - a four dollar cupcake. It was a good cupcake, but do we really need fifty of the same stores selling the same cupcakes? When things become mainstream the demand goes down. Did anyone think of this? I did not study business, but I am also not an idiot. I know people that will drive hours to get beer from specific breweries that only distribute within a portion of certain states (ahem, who could I be talking about?!). When a product is hard to come by it possesses a magical power that makes people want it more. Hello! I have walked almost two miles to get Momofuku Milk Bar products in uncomfortable shoes that gave me blisters - twice! Keep it exclusive people. It will drive demand. Now I really want a cupcake.
